The plan is to turn the property into a medical center, but residents attending a public hearing say they'd like to see the city explore other options before moving forward.
The Homewood City Council voted unanimously to turn the Belk Department Store Building into a medical office.
The former department store will house the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, but not everyone agrees with the vote.
Residents attending the hearing say they would like input on what happens to the building.
鈥淲e deserve better, I know we deserve better because we are better and we all can have better if you continue to communicate and work together as a community,鈥 said one Homewood resident.
Council members say they hope to see the orthopedic center attract more businesses to the area.
