NOAA releases 2025 hurricane forecast, above normal season expected
NOAA's National Weather Service predicts an above-normal amount of tropical activity in the Atlantic basin in 2025.
Hurricanes begin June 1 and last through Nov. 30, but the Atlantic often sees tropical development before the season in May.
NOAA forecasts 13-19 named tropical storms, six to 10 of which are forecast to become hurricanes, and three to five of those will become major hurricanes.
Last year, 18 named storms formed, with 11 of those becoming hurricanes and three of them major hurricanes.
With the average being 14 named hurricanes within a season, NOAA forecasts a 60% chance of an above-average hurricane season.
