Birmingham Police investigating persons of interest in firefighter's death
Birmingham Police Department announced a major update related to the death of a Birmingham firefighter on Tuesday. Jordan Melton was shot and killed nearly eight months ago while on duty, and still no one has been arrested.
Melton鈥檚 mother expressed her frustration earlier during a press conference at the lack of developments in her son鈥檚 case. Just a few hours later, Birmingham Police announced they鈥檙e investigating who they鈥檙e calling possible persons of interest, but the journey for justice isn鈥檛 over yet.
鈥淎fter eight months, I am told there still are no tips, no leads, no suspects,鈥 Rochell Gaston Malone, Jordan Melton鈥檚 mother, said.
Gaston Malone describes grieving her son鈥檚 death and fighting for justice as frustrating.
鈥淲hy that is?鈥 she asked. 鈥淭hat would be a question for police鈥擝irmingham Police Department.鈥
米兰体育 13 asked Birmingham Police to explain the reason for the delay in the investigation.
鈥淚nvestigations take time,鈥 Officer Turman Fitzgerald with the department responded, 鈥渁nd the length that investigations take to lead to arrest is not always on the effort or lack of effort by the detective. The detective is bound by the evidence and the leads that exist in the case.鈥
That鈥檚 why Officer Truman Fitzgerald and detectives hope anyone with information will come forward to help end Gaston Malone鈥檚 nightmare.
鈥淭his case is going to depend heavily on the public coming forward and providing our investigators with tips,鈥 Fitzgerald said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not just aiming for an arrest in this case. We鈥檙e aiming for a conviction.鈥
Melton鈥檚 mother hopes those words will come to fruition sooner, rather than later.
鈥淲e will not rest until this journey for justice is won,鈥 Gaston Malone said.
Gaston Malone established a fund for private investigations to solve Melton鈥檚 death and others in her son鈥檚 name. Crimestoppers is still offering nearly $50,000 for any information that leads to an arrest in Melton鈥檚 death.
